Recently, I have been listening to an audiobook by Travis Lee Heermann called Heart of the Ronin. It’s fun and is helping me pass time driving to and from work. In one scene the author described a sword fight that was nicely detailed. I wondered if he had any actual swordplay experience? And in wondering, I checked his web site. He’s studied martial arts. Nothing about sword. Then I stumbled onto some of his other works… and a funny title, “Zombies on a Plane.”

You need to know that I am not into Zombies stories. I know that it’s all the rage these days since books like World War Z and Cell, movies like 28 Days Later and Resident Evil, comic books like Marvel Zombies, podcasts like The Takeover and free online fiction at Tales of the Zombie War and All Things Zombie.

But really, Zombies?

Okay… A bunch of guys at the dojo are always cracking wise about zombie wars, what to do if attacked and, of course, they have discussed practical martial arts moves for slaying the undead. And a few (Hi!) have stated that they prefer the Dojo Official method of dispatching such creatures permanently (recommended by Steven Brust, but that’s another story).

So, I decided it’s a short story – GIVE IT A TRY. I clicked the link and started reading.

Funny stuff. It had me smiling and yes, at one point, I actually laughed out loud. I mean, the story is kinda predictable; but there’s a gem or two. So go read it and laugh: Zombies on a Plane.

Over the past few years, the Bujinkan has received some interesting media notoriety. I thought it might be nice to recap some of the positive that has been said:

Mind Body & Kick Ass Moves (2004, BBC Three) the show host, Chris Crudelli [see his new book below], stated that the art was “relaxed, soft, and manipulating while taking pressure points and using body weight to take the opponent down.”
[amtap amazon:asin=0756639751]

Fight Science (2006, National Geographic Channel) “like no other fighting style, ninjutsu itself balances every martial skill: power, speed, and timing to exert the least effort for the most damage. Voted Ninjutsu the Best Overall Style.”
[amtap amazon:asin=B001I2EQW2]

Human Weapon (2007, History Channel) this episode is about one of the most mysterious, subversive, and deadly martial arts in the world: Ninjutsu. As the show states, “These are lethal techniques that are designed to get someone in, execute a technique, and out — quickly, effectively and quietly.”
“Ninjutsu is fast, technical and proficient.”
[amtap amazon:asin=B0013XZ6HU]

Mythbusters: Ninja Myths (2007, Discovery Channel) historical theory about ninjas is that “they were peasants who developed unusual fighting techniques to defend against the samurai class. Their skills were reputed to be supernatural.”
