“I think it is good to push yourself to the extreme; to push your mind and body to the point of imminent death has a purpose during a time of war. The tradition of severe training in the martial arts aims to awaken inner power. However, when the time comes, change swiftly. This is tenkan, in other words, being able to control yourself.” — Masaaki Hatsumi

This eventually transformed into Understand? Good. Play!, a book of Bujinkan quotes from Masaaki Hatsumi. A great success, this book has been out of print for too long.

“This [training] cannot be taught. It cannot be understood through mere words. It must be experienced personally.
Today, there are many good books to be found. Most of them are by Hatsumi-sensei with a few by teachers from all over the world.

I’ve decided my next few articles will be quotes from some of my favorite Bujinkan related books.

Every once in a while I am asked, “What were the most important qualities of the ninja?”

Years ago, Hatsumi-soke spoke about this years ago. He stated the three most important qualities of a ninja were honesty, desire to learn, and perseverance.

He further explained the ninja’s honesty was akin to the lessons of justice and integrity. This honesty was a form of enlightenment developed by judging right and wrong with one’s heart as a mirror.

Learning was the ninja’s greatest weapon and companion. The ninja took interest in learning everything… general knowledge and common sense would ultimately enable the ninja to make critical judgments with decisive certainty. This led to understanding of day-to-day affairs and eventually wisdom and spiritual refinement.

The perseverance of the ninja is perhaps the most legendary of all his abilities. The ninja could not be dissuaded from his chosen path once is was begun. He had levels of endurance cultivated over years of training and tempering.

Shidoshi reviews the 2009 movies: Ninja and Ninja Assassin.

I recently saw two ninja movies that came out last year and though both were entertaining, neither was very good. So, here’s my review:

Ninja (2009): Age old story, boy meets girl in ninja school, they bond. Rival ninja student hates boy does bad things and gets a tabi boot to the butt. Rival student returns to make everyone regret the day…

Ninja Assassin (2009): Age old story, boy meets girl in ninja school, they bond. Rival ninja student kills girl. Boy escapes and returns to make everyone regret the day…

So, I’m glad I didn’t pay theater prices ($10 per flick) to see them… Instead i borrowed them from my local library (free).

Question: I’m a member of a Bujinkan Dojo, but sadly for many reasons I haven’t been able to attend in some time; still I’m in constant contact with fights here and there and I have come to realize that no one uses the lunge punch against me. It’s hard for me to use what the Bujinkan taught me… Still I use it and it’s quite effective, but this is not a question about the punch itself but about defending against regular punches (boxing style?)… Any thoughts?

Answer: Bruce Lee is quoted as saying, “Before I learned martial arts, a punch was just a punch and a kick was just a kick. When I studied martial arts, a punch was no longer just a punch and a kick was no longer just a kick. Now I understand martial arts, and a punch is just a punch and a kick is just a kick.”

So, a punch is a punch, a kick is a kick. Whether you practice against a lunge punch, cross punch, etc. doesn’t really matter. In the Bujinkan we prefer to focus on learning how to control distance, timing and balance. If we control the distance, then an opponent’s strike can never reach us. If we control the timing, then the opponent is always a moment too late. If we control the balance (maintaining our own, while unbalancing our opponent), then the opponent is unable to launch another attack.

Most important, is to try and understand why these outbursts (fights) seem to be occurring. Learning to control the distance, timing and balance of a situation BEFORE it becomes a fight is very important. Please, consider returning to your training soon.

Thank you very much for your question.
